The Five Precepts and Beyond – The 2nd Precept – What is Not Given
We continue our series on the Five Precepts begun Sunday, May 10, with the Second Precept which addresses theft, or taking what is not given. The precepts are the Buddha’s invitation to a way of living that supports our own peace, in an offering of care and safety to our world.
The precepts can sound like a list of rules — don’t harm, don’t take what isn’t given, don’t lie, be wise in our sexuality, don’t cloud the mind with intoxicants. Yet, the precepts aren’t rules, they’re alive, intentional trainings (and no one is keeping score). Taken together they are the practice of sila (living in integrity), and the foundation of the entire path.
Over six weeks we will focus on each precept in turn as practices we can live into. Come if you’re new. Come if you’ve been practicing for years. We’ll sit together, listen together, and explore these ancient invitations to lead a more harmonious life.
The Sunday Meditation and Dharma Talk will be held from 10:30 a.m. until noon **In-Person at the Mizell Center** and simultaneously live *Online via Zoom*. Everyone is welcome.
There will be time for meditation, a dharma (teaching) talk by one of our regular or guest teachers, and time for your comments and questions.
