SUMMARY:A Day of Mindfulness: Ancient Teachings for Modern Times with Beth Mulligan
DESCRIPTION:Meditation and mindfulness are everywhere: in hospitals\, clinics\, and schools; in major medical\, psychological\, and scientific journals; on TV; and in popular publications—even on the cover of Time magazine. And thankfully so—since Jon Kabat-Zinn developed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, a treatment blending meditation and yoga\, it has been proven effective in treating conditions like chronic pain\, stress\, anxiety\, and depression for sufferers around the world. Lesser known\, however\, are the deep philosophical roots of MBSR known as the Buddhist dharma\, translated as “the teachings of the Buddha.” Although they form the very foundation underlying MBSR and other mindfulness-based interventions\, they often remain hidden within modern mindfulness practices. Why are these 2500 year old teachings still with us and so effective and relevant to this very day? \nThis Day of Mindfulness will allow participants to answer this question for themselves through the experience of the essential MBSR practices and teachings on the links to their ancient origins. The day will be informed by Beth Mulligan’s forthcoming book; \nThe Dharma of Modern Mindfulness\nNew Harbinger Publications\, January 2\, 2018 \nTHERE WILL BE A BOOK SIGNING AT THE END OF THE RETREAT \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nBeth Mulligan\, PA-C is a board certified Physician Assistant who has practiced medicine in the Coachella Valley for 28 years. She also has a long standing Buddhist meditation and yoga practice. Seeing the way Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn brought these two worlds together through MBSR and under his guidance\, she became a certified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction(MBSR) teacher and is an International Teacher Trainer and retreat leader. Over the last 12 years she brought MBSR to Eisenhower medical Center\, Desert Regional Medical Center\, the Lucy Curci Cancer Center\, Shelter from the Storm\, and school\, hospices and county agencies in the Desert. She offers these life changing teachings in ways that are secular and accessible to everyone. As a Core Teacher at Insight Community of the Desert\, and long time Zen Senior Student\, Beth Ann Mulligan\, is equally committed to to exploring the Buddha’s path. \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. Please contact the event coordinator if you need the scholarship support.

SUMMARY:Personal and Boundless Loving Kindness with Amma Thanasanti
DESCRIPTION:Loving-kindness has personal and boundless facets. When we cultivate it personally\, we bring loving kindness directly to our body\, emotions\, mind states and relationships. Knowing unconditioned love is an access point to let go of a solid self-nature. When we do that we let go of boundaries that keep us feeling separate. Our fears that we will lose our personal love relationships release. We stop believing the stories we tell ourselves about who and w what we are. The myths that we are undeserving and essentially unlovable fall away. In this openness\, the heart natural response is to feel and let love in. \nThis retreat is suitable for new and experienced meditators. Bring a lunch for yourself. Kindly come fragrance-free for those with chemical sensitivites. \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nAmma Thanasanti is the founder and Spiritual Director of Awakening Truth. She is a California born spiritual teacher dedicated to serving all beings. She has been committed to awakening since she first encountered the Dharma in 1979. As a former Buddhist nun of 26 years\, she combines the precision and rigor of the Ajahn Chah Forest Tradition and a passion for wholeness. \nAmma has been teaching intensive meditation retreats worldwide since 1996. She invites you to pause to see what is liberating at the core of your human condition and integrate that into your daily life. \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. SUMMARY:Awakening Together: Building Beautiful and Beloved Communities with Larry Yang
DESCRIPTION:Join ICD Founding Teacher\, Larry Yang for this daylong retreat. Building community can seem like a worthy purpose\, a high aspiration\, even a wholesome ideal. But the practices of Mindfulness and Lovingkindness invite us into experiencing more than that. The Compassion and Wisdom of Mindfulness invites us into the experience that Community is not just possible\, but that it is necessary for our spiritual growth and path…. and that it is\, sometimes\, a challenging thing to accomplish. \nBuilding community is not a luxury; it is not a hobby; it is a necessity in the intensities of this current world. Please come with the intention to really explore what Community feels like and to experience both how Community holds us together to grow and love\, and also how it can push us beyond who we think we are as individuals and as groups\, in the beauty of our human condition. \nBeginning and experienced meditators are welcomed. Please bring a bag lunch\, if you can. There will be a book signing and purchase opportunity for Larry’s new book Awakening Together at the end of the daylong. \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nLarry Yang teaches mindfulness and loving kindness retreats nationally and has a special interest in creating access to the Dharma for diverse\, multicultural communities. Larry has practiced meditation for almost 30 years\, with extensive time in southeast Asia\, and a 6 month period of ordination as a monastic under the guidance of Ajahn Tong. Larry is on the Teachers Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center\, and is one of the core teachers of both East Bay Meditation Center (Oakland) and Insight Community of the Desert (Palm Springs). His current focus is training spiritual leadership within Communities of Color and LGBTQI communities. Larry was honored for his work in equity  and inclusion by being selected as the community’s choice for Grand Marshal in the 2016 San Francisco LGBTIQ Pride Parade\, whose theme was “For Racial and Economic Justice.” He has been developing community meditation teachers in Spirit Rock’s Community Dharma Leadership Program for 10 years\, and is one of the core trainers for the current Spirit Rock Dharma Teacher Training Program to develop fully empowered Dharma teachers in multicultural communities. \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45 with a sliding scale. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. SUMMARY:Connecting to our Heart's Refuge with Ian Challis
DESCRIPTION:A sense of home or refuge — an internal base that offers shelter\, support and safety — is vital in an ever-changing\, unpredictable world. Buddhist teachings offer three universal refuges: Our own innate capacity for heart/mind awakening (Buddha)\, the refuge of practice and wisdom (Dharma)\, and the refuge of community (Sangha). \nJoin us for a day of practice and exploration of refuge as it relates to our lives and our world. Is it possible to bring a sense of home and refuge wherever we may find ourselves? \nWe will spend the day exploring mindfulness practices designed to strengthen and support this internal sense of refuge. We will also look at how this strong internal confidence and safety can be shared and supported with others through the practices of community: lovingkindness\, compassion and wise action. \nThe day will include periods of sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, short dharma talks and discussion. This event is suitable or new or experienced meditators. Please bring a lunch. \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nIan Challis practices and teaches in the Insight Tradition of Buddhism. He is a regular teacher and founding board member at Insight Community of the Desert in Palm Springs. He also teaches at Meditation as Refuge\, Michael’s House\, and the Desert Meditation Group in Rancho Mirage. Ian has studied and sat residential retreats with Rodney Smith\, Santikaro\, Narayan Liebenson\, Larry Yang\, Leigh Brasington\, Sylvia Boorstein\, Tara Brach and Joseph Goldstein\, among many others. Ian is currently pursuing certification as a teacher of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. In April 2017 he graduated from the Community Dharma Leaders Program of Spirit Rock Meditation Center. \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45 with a sliding scale. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. SUMMARY:Waking Up in RelationshipA half-day retreat and workshop with Cheryl Slean
DESCRIPTION:Relationship can sometimes seem like the last frontier of spiritual practice. Because there’s so much that goes on inside when we’re interacting with others\, it’s easy to lose awareness and fall back into old\, unhelpful habits of relating. SUMMARY:Mindfulness in a CrAzy World with Beth Mulligan and Larry Yang
DESCRIPTION:How do we develop mindfulness and compassion in the midst of the world’s contradictory craziness?” Join us to explore mindfulness and loving-kindness practices in demanding and challenging times. \nThis First Noble Truth that there is suffering in our lives—seems to be even more apparent these days than not. We live in a world that encourages us to get away with as much as we can\, while giving as little as possible. Some leaders and messages in the larger culture encourage us to win at any cost\, to hoard as much material wealth as possible\, and to gain as much power as we can. One current advertising slogan paraphrases a cynical aphorism of doing things before asking any permission because it is easier to ask for forgiveness afterwards than to ask for permission. \nIs this how we wish to live our lives? We know if you are reading this you don’t\, however you may be asking\, “How do we develop mindfulness and compassion in the midst of this contradictory craziness?” Join us to explore mindfulness and lovingkindness practices in demanding and challenging times. Create the stillness and peacefulness internally\, that is so needed in the external world. We already have this peace within us\, sometimes\, like these times\, it just needs some extra space to emerge and become strong. The intention of this retreat is to provide this kind and open space for all of us. \nBeginning and experienced meditators are welcomed. Please bring a bag lunch. \nRegister\n  \n \nInstructors: \nBeth Mulligan\, PA-C is a certified Mindful Self Compassion Teacher and international teacher trainer. She was in the first group to be invited to MSC teacher training\, and has been teaching MSC with great passion and enthusiasm ever since\, at the UC Irvine Center for Integrative Medicine and Insight LA as well as providing workshops for professional caregivers. Beth is also a certified MBSR teacher and teacher trainer\, and adjunct faculty for the UMASS Center for Mindfulness. She has been teaching MBSR for over a decade to diverse populations; from the critically ill\, to non-profit organizations\, the underserved\, educators\, and corporate leaders. Beth has a background in primary care medicine as a Board Certified Physician Assistant and has practiced medicine for over 25 years. She is a senior student of Roshi Charles Tenshin Fletcher at Yokoji Zen Center where she has lived in residence\, and is the Guiding Dharma teacher at Insight Community of the Desert. \nLarry Yang teaches meditation retreats nationally\, and has a special interest in creating access to the Dharma for diverse multicultural communities. Larry has practiced meditation for almost 30 years\, with extensive time in Burma and Thailand\, and a six-month period of ordination as a Buddhist monk\, under the guidance of Ajahn Tong. He is on the Teacher’s Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center\, is one of the core teachers of both East Bay Meditation Center (Oakland) and Insight Community of the Desert (Palm Springs). He is part of the coordinating team developing community meditation teachers in Spirit Rock’s Community Dharma Leadership Program\, and is leading the next Spirit Rock Dharma Teacher Training Program to begin in July\, 2017. Larry’s book Awakening Together: The Spiritual Practice of Inclusivity and Community will be published by Wisdom Publications in October 2017. \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45. This fee is shared with the teacher(s)\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. SUMMARY:Fierce Compassion: A Daylong Workshop for Women with Beth Mulligan
DESCRIPTION:In this 6 hour retreat-style workshop we’ll explore what it means to have a “Strong back and a soft front” in other words what might it look like to go through the world with an open heart and strong clear boundaries? \nVulnerability researcher\, Social Worker and best selling author Brene Brown says\, “The most compassionate people I know have the clearest boundaries.” \nWith Compassionate Awareness (mindfulness) in the forefront of our day together\, we’ll practice the well researched exercises from the Mindful Self-Compassion program developed by Kristin Neff PhD and Chris Germer PhD. We’ll see how connecting with self kindness\, and common humanity helps us stay true to our deepest values\, and we’ll explore ways to work with strong emotions with wisdom and compassion\, seeing how our feelings can actually work for us with consciousness and purpose. \nThe day will include guided meditations and experiential- interactive exercises\, short talks and mindful movement. \nPlease bring your lunch. \nRegister\nInstructor: \nBeth Mulligan\, PA-C is a certified Mindful Self Compassion Teacher and international teacher trainer.
