Germer\, PhD\, leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy (www.MindfulSelfCompassion.org) and Kristin Neff\, PhD\, pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion (www.Self-Compassion.org). \n\n\n\nMindfulness is the first step in emotional healing—being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy\, sadness\, anger\, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness\, sympathy and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting. MSC is a compassion skills building class\, not a meditation class. It is a great follow up to any other Mindfulness program (MBSR\, Mindful Eating etc.) \n\n\n\nMSC can be learned by anyone. Beth teaches the 10-week and nine-day practicum for teachers in training nationally and internationally. Beth is a certified Mindful Self-Compassion teacher and teacher trainer and does international training for the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. \n\n\n\nShe is a long time student of Charles Tenshin Fletcher- Abbot of Yokoji Zen Mountain Center\, where she practices\, trains and has lived in residence. The meetings will be similar to group interviews at a retreat\, where several people meet together with the teacher to get feedback on their practice questions and reports. On February 5\, 2012 ten spiritual friends met in the living room of Larry Yang and Stephen Pickard with the intention of creating a community of mindfulness practitioners. Just 2 months later\, on April 28\, 90 people celebrated the first meeting at the Center for Spiritual Living. With the aspiration of creating our own home for practice and service\, we began the search for our own building. On July 26\, 2015 the dream was realized and we joyously convened the first meeting at 1111 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way. \nToday in 2021 we find ourselves in a similar space as in our beginnings\, one of fluid change. Our building lease has expired; we are placing our statues in the care of the Guiding Council and other items in storage. We may appear adrift\, but our resources go deep. Our spiritual practice and resiliency\, which has kept us together in the uncertainty of the last year\, can hold us as we look for our next spiritual home. With responsiveness to the Sangha\, our Guiding Council and Board can provide the loving leadership to make the decisions which will shape our near future. \nThe Ceremony \nMany of those who formed the original Sangha will be with us at the meeting. Cheryl Slean will lead the meditation. Larry Yang and Beth Mulligan\, our former Guiding Teachers\, will share thoughts on ICDs past. Ian Challis will speak of the present and introduce the Guiding Council.
