SUMMARY:Waking Up White: Doing Work So Needed in the World
DESCRIPTION:A Seven Part Class Series\, starting November 17\, 2018 \nThe spiritual path we follow in this life calls us to act on our beliefs and aspirations. As we strive to become more mindful through the fundamental practices of lovingkindness and compassion\, we grow in our awareness of the attachments that hold us back from attainment of the spiritual goals of peace and freedom. Our journey challenges our deep-rooted learning and unconscious beliefs. Privilege and our unconscious assumptions and behavior around privilege result in harmful actions to communities of color who do not share the same benefits and privileges of being white in this society. Insight Community of the Desert is committed to creating and all-inclusive meditation community in the Coachella Valley. With over three-quarters of the population in Palm Springs identifying as white\, we become increasingly aware of the work that needs to be done to create an all-inclusive and welcoming meditation community. \nThese are difficult and challenging times in our nation and community. We have seen the political fueling of racial tensions through the overt actions of a variety of white supremacist organizations and groups. The path of the Buddha calls us to become aware – aware of our thoughts and actions that are not mindful of ourselves and others. Furthermore the Buddha called us to a life of compassion and loving kindness through the development of awareness. This is not a path of separateness or exclusivity. It is a path of inclusion- a path that is open and welcoming to everyone. \nWaking up White is a 7 part course of commitment and dedication to understanding ourselves as white members of society. The course challenges us to examine how our position of privilege impacts the lives of others who do not share that same privilege. The course will challenge our fundamental beliefs in an open\, transparent and safe environment of learning and change. The course will offer readings and interactive exercises which will stimulate the mind and enable us to wake up together in our efforts to build an inclusive community for meditation\, care\, and loving support. \nOpen to all ICD sangha and UUCOD congregants\, who self-identify as white people\, this in-depth program meets seven Saturday mornings (9:30-12:00)\, starting November 17\, then December 1\, December 15\, January 12\, February 2\, February 23\, and March 16. This is the experience of Integrity or creating wholeness from the different areas of our lives. And we know intuitively\, experientially\, and empirically that the Whole is so much greater than the sum of the parts. \nJoin us to explore cultivating Integrity and Wholeness in our spiritual practice\, regardless of external conditions upon us. Open to all levels of meditation—beginners to experienced practitioners. Please bring your lunch and all of who you are into our experience together. \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nLarry Yang teaches meditation retreats nationally\, and has a special interest in creating access to the Dharma for diverse multicultural communities. Larry has practiced meditation for almost 30 years\, with extensive time in Burma and Thailand\, and a six-month period of ordination as a Buddhist monk\, under the guidance of Ajahn Tong. He is on the Teacher’s Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center\, is one of the core teachers of both East Bay Meditation Center (Oakland) and Insight Community of the Desert (Palm Springs). \nHe is part of the coordinating team developing community meditation teachers in Spirit Rock’s Community Dharma Leadership Program\, and is leading the next Spirit Rock Dharma Teacher Training Program. She was the first out queer teacher with Eric Kolvig to lead insight meditation retreats for the Gay\, Lesbian\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Gender Queer community.\n\nShe is the founding teacher of Insight Meditation Center of the Pioneer Valley. SUMMARY:Unplug and Tune In: A day of practice with Ian Challis
DESCRIPTION:In the busy-ness of daily life\, how often do we get a chance to really slow down? How often are we able to give ourselves the gift of stillness and presence for an extended period of time? \nEven those of us who are regular meditators may sometimes find ourselves squeezing in our meditation practice after everything else. On Saturday\, August 25\, let’s prioritize our practice\, let’s give ourselves the space\, time and support to truly enjoy and explore mindfulness practice in the company of like-minded folks. \nThe focus of the day will be on practice: plain and simple. This longer format daylong will be similar to what you might experience on an extended residential retreat: alternating periods of walking\, sitting and heart meditations. There will be brief practical instructions and tips offered\, with opportunities for questions. \nAll that is required is a willingness to show up\, and to practice the Buddha’s way of peace that leads to wisdom and an open heart. \nDoors open at 8:30 and practice begins at 9:00am. Please come early\, enjoy some tea\, and relax into the day. Please bring a packed lunch. Space is limited so please register soon! \nRegister \n \nInstructor: \nIan Challis is the Guiding Teacher of Insight Community of the Desert\, Palm Springs. A lifelong interest in the dharma and meditation matured into a committed Insight practice in 2005. Since then he has sat residential retreats and studied with many teachers including Narayan Liebenson\, Larry Yang\, Leigh Brasington\, Ven. Santikaro\, Marcia Rose\, Joseph Goldstein and many others. He works as an artist and designer. He is a founding board member and past president of Insight Community of the Desert\, and leads the Desert Meditation Group at UUCOD. Ian is a 2017 graduate of the Community Dharma Leader (CDL) teacher training program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. There is a sliding scale and you may contact the event coordinator if you need a full scholarship.

DESCRIPTION:Insight Community of the Desert and Mindful Way are thrilled to be offering Mindful Self Compassion: an eight week program designed to bring greater ease and well being to your life; offering skills to help you make changes with kindness instead of self-criticism. \nWhat is Mindful Self Compassion (MSC)? \nMSC was developed by Christopher K. Germer\, PhD\, leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy (www.MindfulSelfCompassion.org) and Kristin Neff\, PhD\, pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion (www.Self-Compassion.org). MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion\, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing—being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy\, sadness\, anger\, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness\, sympathy and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting. Research has shown that self-compassion greatly enhances emotional wellbeing. It boosts happiness\, reduces anxiety and depression\, and can even help maintain healthy lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise. Being both mindful and compassionate leads to greater ease and well-being in our daily lives. \nMindful Self Compassion (MSC) can be learned by anyone. It’s the practice of repeatedly evoking good will toward ourselves especially when we’re suffering—cultivating the same desire that all living beings have to live happily and free from suffering. \nMost of us feel compassion when a close friend is struggling. What would it be like to receive the same caring attention whenever you needed it most? All that’s required is a shift in the direction of our attention—recognizing that as a human being\, you\, too\, are a worthy recipient of compassion. \nIn MSC you’ll learn: \nhow to stop being so hard on yourself\nhow to handle difficult emotions with greater ease\nhow to motivate yourself with encouragement rather than criticism\nhow to transform difficult relationships\, both old and new\nmindfulness and self-compassion practices for home and everyday life\nthe theory and research behind mindful self-compassion\nhow to become your own best teacher \nMSC is a great follow up to any other Mindfulness program (MBSR\, Mindful Eating etc.) \nMSC is not a meditation class\, it is a compassion skills building class. \nA randomized\, controlled trial demonstrated that MSC significantly increased self-compassion\, compassion for others\, mindfulness\, and life satisfaction\, as well as decreased depression\, anxiety and stress. Improvements were linked to how much a person practiced mindfulness and self-compassion in their daily lives. \nFee includes eight 2.5 hr sessions\, one 4 hour retreat and all materials. She has been teaching MBSR for over a decade to diverse populations; from the critically ill\, to non-profit organizations\, the underserved\, educators\, and corporate leaders. She currently teaches at the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine at UCI and Insight LA. Beth teaches the 10-week and nine-day practicum for teachers in training nationally and internationally. Beth is a certified Mindful Self-Compassion teacher and teacher trainer and does international training for the Center for Mindful Self-Compassion. \nBeth has a background in primary care medicine as a Board Certified Physician Assistant having graduated Magna cum Laude from Duke University and has practiced medicine for over thirty years. She is a long time student of Charles Tenshin Fletcher\, Roshi at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center where she has lived in residence. Beth is a core teacher at Insight Community of the Desert and is a certified yoga instructor. \nCost: The all-inclusive registration fee for this event is $350.
