SUMMARY:Unplug and Tune-In: A Day of Mindfulness with Ian Challis
DESCRIPTION:Need a break from the busy-ness of life? Some time to reconnect to what is truly important and nourishing? \nSometimes we may find ourselves squeezing in our practice after everything else. On Saturday\, June 15\, let’s prioritize our practice\, let’s offer ourselves the space\, time and support to truly enjoy and explore mindfulness practice in the company of like-minded friends. \nThe focus of the day will be practice: plain and simple. The day will be similar to what you might experience on an extended residential retreat: alternating periods of walking\, sitting and heart meditations. There will be brief practical instructions\, and support with opportunities for questions. \nAll that is required is a willingness to show up\, and to practice the Buddha’s way of peace that leads to wisdom and an open heart. \nDoors open at 9:00 and practice begins at 9:30am. Please come early\, enjoy some tea and relax into the day. Please bring a packed lunch. Space is limited so please register soon! \n \nTeacher: Ian Challis is the Guiding Teacher of Insight Community of the Desert. After decades of interest in the dharma and meditation\, he embraced a committed Insight practice in 2005. Since then\, he has sat residential retreats and studied with many senior teachers. He is a founding board member of Insight Community of the Desert and leads the Desert Meditation Group in Rancho Mirage. Ian is a 2017 graduate of the Community Dharma Leader (CDL) training program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. \nRegister \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $40 with a sliding scale. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. A dana offering (voluntary donation) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. You may contact the event coordinator if you need a full scholarship.

DESCRIPTION:The writer Audre Lorde said\, “The Master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.”\nAnd at times it might seem that we live in a world that only values the three poisons of Greed\, Hatred and Delusion. \nAs activists\, agitators and change makers\, many of us were taught that if we scream louder\, sleep less and are more burnt out\, then we would be held as the most devoted to the cause. And in response\, we might incline our thoughts\, words\, actions\, our hearts\, towards these poisons. \nWhat if we chose other tools to respond with? \nIn this daylong retreat\, we will practice with how to direct our thoughts and actions towards Loving Kindness\, to create the kind of heart that can hold the humanity of All Beings. Working with the Brahmaviharas\, we’ll utilize these practices to liberate the heart and build resiliency\, in order to transform rage and anger into skillful action. \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nBooker brings her heart\, wisdom and compassion to the intersection of Dharma\, embodied wisdom\, and social justice. Working for over a decade with the most vulnerable populations in NYC\, she shares her expertise nationally as a public speaker\, Dharma teacher\, and trainer\, in the efforts to support the sustainability of front line changemakers. She is a graduate of Spirit Rock’s Mindful Yoga and Meditation Training (2012)\, Community Dharma Leader’s Training (2016)\, and will graduate from their 4 year Residential Teacher Training in 2020. Booker is a co-author of Best Practices for Yoga in a Criminal Justice Setting and contributed to the paper on Gender and Trauma through Georgetown Law’s Center on Poverty and Inequality. With over three-quarters of the population in Palm Springs identifying as white\, we become increasingly aware of the work that needs to be done to create an all-inclusive and welcoming meditation community. \nThese are difficult and challenging times in our nation and community. We have seen the political fueling of racial tensions through the overt actions of a variety of white supremacist organizations and groups. The path of the Buddha calls us to become aware – aware of our thoughts and actions that are not mindful of ourselves and others. Furthermore the Buddha called us to a life of compassion and loving kindness through the development of awareness. This is not a path of separateness or exclusivity. It is a path of inclusion- a path that is open and welcoming to everyone. \nWaking up White is a 7 part course of commitment and dedication to understanding ourselves as white members of society. The course challenges us to examine how our position of privilege impacts the lives of others who do not share that same privilege. The course will challenge our fundamental beliefs in an open\, transparent and safe environment of learning and change. The course will offer readings and interactive exercises which will stimulate the mind and enable us to wake up together in our efforts to build an inclusive community for meditation\, care\, and loving support. \nOpen to all ICD sangha and UUCOD congregants\, this in-depth program meets seven Saturday mornings (9:30-12:00)\, starting November 17\, then December 1\, December 15\, January 12\, February 2\, February 23\, and March 16.
