SUMMARY:MBSR for Personal\, Interpersonal and Social Transformation
DESCRIPTION:If you have ever wondered how your meditation practice and living mindfully can contribute to the well being of the world\, all beings and the planet itself\, this class is for you! \nWhy MBSR? Why now? When Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn first created and offered MBSR 44 years ago\, he took his long dedicated Buddhist practice\, into the heart of a New England Medical Center where he worked as a molecular biologist. He did it by using non-Buddhist\, inclusive language\, combined with stress physiology\, adult learning theory\, and neuroscience hoping to open these beneficial practices to as wide a range of suffering people as possible. It worked. Since then\, overwhelming research has shown that this program has myriad health benefits and significantly increases empathy and compassion. Originally\, his focus was not only to help individuals\, but he saw it as a Public Health Initiative\, knowing that everything is truly interconnected. As others suffer\, we suffer. As we change the world changes. \nThis 8-week program\, founded on Buddhist teachings and practices\, is also informed by physiology\, neuroscience\, and Kabat-Zinn’s experience as a social activist. When we practice mindfulness\, it increases our capacity to face our own suffering\, the suffering of the world\, and to foster the courage and resilience to take wise action to benefit others and the planet. This particular class\, taught by Dr. Dennis McLeod and Beth Mulligan\, is informed by our experience training a group of BIPOC MBSR teachers\, and learning how to offer the class in a way that is “Bigger Than Self Mindfulness\,” founded on anti-oppression and an imperative to decolonize the program. Join us as we explore our innate capacity to transform our own suffering\, which\, if cultivated skillfully\, leads us to express the true values of our hearts and recognize that we are all deeply interconnected. \nWho is this class for? \n* People interested in developing a personal mindfulness meditation practice\, for stress reduction and increased well-being.\n* People with an established or invested in creating a meditation practice\, who wish to take the most widely researched structured program\, to cultivate greater health\, physically\, mentally and emotionally\, while cultivating the strength to face the greater suffering in society\, and benefit the world.\n* People who have primarily learned Mindfulness from white teachers in white communities\, and want to experience it from highly skilled and culturally sensitive teachers.\n* People who want to take their personal practice into the world\, addressing the limits and harms of white-dominant culture\, developing awareness to see where they can engage with inequities in society\, and making change happen. \nWHEN: Mondays starting July 31 (Orientation)\, then Aug 14 – Oct. 3\, 9:30-11:30am (no class 9/4); Daylong on Sept 23\, 8:00am – 2:30pm \nCOST: Sliding Scale $50 – $250. No one is turned away for lack of funds. \nREGISTRATION IS CLOSED \nDr Dennis McLeod is a psychologist\, mental health consultant\, a Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion practitioner\, and mindfulness teacher. He is a proud alumnus of Morehouse College and he completed graduate studies at the University of Florida. His clinical interests and areas of expertise include Black men’s mental health\, identity\, trauma and coping.  You can find more info here.   \n  \n  \nBeth Mulligan has completed all steps of the professional Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher training program through the University of Massachusetts under Jon Kabat-Zinn PhD and his colleagues and is a certified MBSR teacher. She teaches Mindfulness at many major medical centers\, Universities\, schools\, non-profit organizations and corporations. She also trains professionals in mindfulness-based interventions and participates in research on the benefits of mindfulness.  With her partner Hugh she is the co-founder of Mindful-Way Stress Reduction programs which serves diverse populations across the country and in England. You can find more info here. \n  \nWith deep gratitude to Mindful-Way\, Insight Community of the Desert\, and Meditation Coalition for making this happen.

SUMMARY:Daylong: The Joy of Letting Go with Mary Stancavage
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha said we suffer because we cling and if we could let go\, we would have peace. However\, this is more easily said than done. How do we let go of those fixed ideas and habits of mind? How do we even recognize where we are stuck? \nThis day will offer the opportunity to see where you really hold on and how this practice can support the freedom of letting go with movement toward clarity\, wisdom and compassion. \nThere will be dharma\, sitting and walking meditation and conversation. The day is suitable for everyone. \nDetails:  Zoom access will also be available for out of town sangha\, and others not able to attend in person.  They will receive the zoom link in the confirmation email. \nIn-person participants will meet at Unitarian Universalist Church of the Desert (UUCOD). The facility requires that all who enter are vaccinated. If you have not shown proof of vaccination before\, please be prepared to show it at the door. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat: The Three Tenets of Zen Peacemaking with Jokai Blackwell
DESCRIPTION:The Three Tenets: Not-Knowing\, Bearing Witness and Taking Action serve as a catalyst for transformative engagement in the world. \n\n\nThe Three Tenets of Zen Peacemaking were originally developed and taught by Roshi Bernie Glassman\, a Dharma successor of Maezumi Roshi and pioneer of engaged Buddhism. \nAt Yokoji Zen Mountain Center\, we focus on the Three Tenets during our monthly Day of Reflection. The Three Tenets: Not-Knowing\, Bearing Witness and Taking Action serve as a catalyst for transformative engagement in the world. The Three Tenets support our ability to clearly see\, work with\, and respond to complex and deeply triggering concerns and issues. Through the practice of meditation\, we come face to face with Not-Knowing\, realizing the limitations of our fixed ideas and concepts. Out of this place of open encounter with life\, our capacity to Bear Witness to the pain of the world emerges. As we hear the cries and sorrow of a land in tumult\, we naturally Take Action to respond to the suffering we see and feel all around us. \nThis day long retreat will include ample time for meditation and periods of restful silence as well as dharma talks and discussions focused on Not-Knowing\, Bearing Witness and Taking Action. \n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCost: The sliding scale registration fee for this event is $45 with sliding scale. \n\n\n\nA portion of this fee is shared with the teacher\, however this does not mean the costs of the event or teachings are fully covered.  Dana (voluntary donations) may be offered on the day of the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. When people are able to extend as much generosity as possible\, financial accessibility to our events comes with greater ease for the whole community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJokai Blackwell\n\n\n\nGuiding Council \n\n\n\nJokai relocated to Southern California from the UK in 2000 to study with Charles Tenshin Fletcher Roshi at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center. After completing formal study\, encompassing over a decade of residential training and service\, he received Dharma Transmission (full authorization to teach) in the White Plum Lineage of Zen Buddhism. SUMMARY:Mindful Self-Compassion with Beth Mulligan
DESCRIPTION:Fall Fundraiser\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n8 session series on Thursdays\, September 10 to October 29 @ 10 am – 12:30 pm\n\n\n\nInsight Community of the Desert in cooperation with Mindful Way is please to announce Mindful Self Compassion. This eight week program is designed to bring greater ease and well being to your daily life by combining the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion. This combination is a powerful tool for emotional resilience. \n\n\n\nBeth Mulligan is graciously donating all proceeds from the class to Insight Community of the Desert to help us overcome our current budget shortfalls. Please consider making additional donations to support our sangha or to help people attend who might not otherwise be able to participate.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWhat is Mindful Self Compassion (MSC)?\n\n\n\nMiindful Self Compassion was developed by Christopher K. Germer\, PhD\, leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy (www.MindfulSelfCompassion.org) and Kristin Neff\, PhD\, pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion (www.Self-Compassion.org). \n\n\n\nMindfulness is the first step in emotional healing—being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy\, sadness\, anger\, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness\, sympathy and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting. MSC is a compassion skills building class\, not a meditation class. It is a great follow up to any other Mindfulness program (MBSR\, Mindful Eating etc.) \n\n\n\nMSC can be learned by anyone. In this program you’ll learn: \n\n\n\nhow to stop being so hard on yourselfhow to handle difficult emotions with greater easehow to motivate yourself with encouragement rather than criticismhow to transform difficult relationships\, both old and newmindfulness and self-compassion practices for home and everyday lifethe theory and research behind mindful self-compassionhow to become your own best teacher\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Teacher\n\n\n\nBeth Mulligan\, PA-C is a certified MBSR teacher\, teacher trainer\, and adjunct faculty through the UMASS Center for Mindfulness. SUMMARY:Series Cancelled....On Race and Racism: Going to the Core
DESCRIPTION:A Workshop for People of Color \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHave you been frustrated by the current divisiveness and polarization around racial issues in the United States? Do you want to understand what is at the core of racist rhetoric and behavior? Are you interested in the issue of homophobia in communities of color? \n\n\n\nWe’d like to invite you to a three-part series in which those and other related issues will be discussed. The facilitator\, Lauren N. Nile\, who is African American\, has requested that the course be open to only those who identify as a person of color. She believes that affinity groups of those who identify as people of color provide the safe\, non-judgmental environment necessary to dialog about issues of race and racism in American society-at-large\, and homophobia in communities of color. \n\n\n\nThe goal of the series is twofold: \n\n\n\nTo offer information on the very core of race and racism; and\,To provide a safe environment in which people of color of all sexual orientations\, gender identities\, and gender expressions may dialogue in a safe\, non-judgmental environment about racism and homophobia in communities of color. It is hoped that in the process\, participants may increase awareness of whatever personal unconscious biases they may hold about both their own and other marginalized groups.\n\n\n\nThe race and racism issues presented in the session focus on the experience of several groups in the United States\, Native Americans\, Latinx Americans\, Asian Americans\, African Americans\, and Muslim Americans. They are examined through presentations\, group dialogue\, journal writing\, personal sharing\, and meditation. \n\n\n\nLauren facilitated an “On Race and Racism: Going to the Core” session in October\, 2019\, for European Americans. The hope is that the group of People of Color\, and the group of European Americans that have completed the session will come together sometime in the Spring of 2020 to dialogue about their respective experiences in the course and its impact on them. \n\n\n\nPlease click on the link below to find out more and to register for this important session. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCost: The registration fee for this event is $75. This fee does not fully cover the cost of the three sessions. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. You may contact the event coordinator if you need a full scholarship. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLauren N. Nile is an author\, trainer\, keynote speaker and retired attorney. She is the author of RACE: My Story & Humanity’s Bottom Line. Since 1990\, Lauren has conducted workshops for nonprofit organizations\, educational institutions\, governmental agencies and Fortune 500 corporations that focus on creating environments in which understanding and kindness are valued regardless of demographic differences. \n\n\n\nLauren focuses her community-based trainings on one topic – The oneness of humanity. The goal of her work is to help the human species mature beyond bigotry and violence through the understanding of our profound human oneness. She believes that wisdom and compassion result from that understanding. Lauren is deeply committed to help all people see the Divine in themselves and themselves in each other.

SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat: Facing Your Demons with Mary Stancavage
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha had to face the armies of Mara on the night of his awakening. Milarepa\, the Tibetan wise man\, came home one day to find his cave filled with demons. Most of us deal with difficulties\, so-called demons\, regularly but often they’re hard to recognize or we choose not to look. Fear\, judgement\, shame\, anger\, distractions and other hindrances can all show up in many ways. Often we try to find a way around them or ignore them altogether but the Buddha invites us to turn towards our difficulties and sit with them. Only through facing and naming our demons do we find freedom. Easier said than done. \nIn this daylong you will have the opportunity to identify what is most uncomfortable and turn towards the discomfort to develop a different relationship with the experience. Come spend a day facing your demons and yourself with kindness and compassion\, Maybe invite them in for tea. There will be dharma talks\, sitting and walking meditation and conversation. Suitable for everyone. \n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45. A portion of this fee is shared with the teacher\, however this does not mean the costs of the event or teachings are fully covered. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Teacher:  Mary Stancavage has practiced meditation\, yoga\, and cultivated a spiritual practice for over 30 years and in 2009 was empowered to teach Buddhadharma. Mary is based in the Los Angeles area and teaches classes\, retreats and does individual mentoring. She has taught at mindfulness at recovery centers\, has co-facilitated Year-to-Live groups since 2008\, and has had a weekly dharma class for over a decade. She also was a director at Against the Stream for ten years. Mary completed the Buddhist Chaplaincy Program at the Sati Center and served as volunteer chaplain at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. She also served as Executive Director of the Mind Body Awareness Project from 2016 to 2018. In taking the practice off the cushion\, Mary is honored to serve on the board of CLUE: Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice. Along with teaching she continues to investigate what it means to live with an undefended heart. Fun fact: Mary has a Masters Degree from UCLA and worked as an archaeologist in the Middle East.
