SUMMARY:A Morning of Practice – An *In Person* Half-Day Retreat with Ian Challis
DESCRIPTION:It’s been said “if it isn’t simple\, it isn’t vipassana.” This morning of practice will be an opportunity to explore (by doing) how we can keep our practice simple\, enjoyable\, and effective. Gentle instructions will be offered with plenty of time to “see for ourselves.” We will practice in Noble Silence\, with time for questions and community. For beginning and experienced meditators alike. Everybody is welcome. \nPlease join us as we practice together in community and take a few hours to experience the gift of quiet practice. With our busy lives and the stress of each day\, we sometimes let our practice slip away\, yet it is so important to maintain\, especially right now. \nLocation: Mizell Center\, 480 S. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat: The Three Tenets of Zen Peacemaking with Jokai Blackwell
DESCRIPTION:The Three Tenets: Not-Knowing\, Bearing Witness and Taking Action serve as a catalyst for transformative engagement in the world. \n\n\nThe Three Tenets of Zen Peacemaking were originally developed and taught by Roshi Bernie Glassman\, a Dharma successor of Maezumi Roshi and pioneer of engaged Buddhism. \nAt Yokoji Zen Mountain Center\, we focus on the Three Tenets during our monthly Day of Reflection. The Three Tenets: Not-Knowing\, Bearing Witness and Taking Action serve as a catalyst for transformative engagement in the world. The Three Tenets support our ability to clearly see\, work with\, and respond to complex and deeply triggering concerns and issues. Through the practice of meditation\, we come face to face with Not-Knowing\, realizing the limitations of our fixed ideas and concepts. Out of this place of open encounter with life\, our capacity to Bear Witness to the pain of the world emerges. As we hear the cries and sorrow of a land in tumult\, we naturally Take Action to respond to the suffering we see and feel all around us. \nThis day long retreat will include ample time for meditation and periods of restful silence as well as dharma talks and discussions focused on Not-Knowing\, Bearing Witness and Taking Action. \n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCost: The sliding scale registration fee for this event is $45 with sliding scale. \n\n\n\nA portion of this fee is shared with the teacher\, however this does not mean the costs of the event or teachings are fully covered.  Dana (voluntary donations) may be offered on the day of the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. When people are able to extend as much generosity as possible\, financial accessibility to our events comes with greater ease for the whole community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJokai Blackwell\n\n\n\nGuiding Council \n\n\n\nJokai relocated to Southern California from the UK in 2000 to study with Charles Tenshin Fletcher Roshi at Yokoji Zen Mountain Center. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat: Facing Your Demons with Mary Stancavage
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha had to face the armies of Mara on the night of his awakening. Milarepa\, the Tibetan wise man\, came home one day to find his cave filled with demons. Most of us deal with difficulties\, so-called demons\, regularly but often they’re hard to recognize or we choose not to look. Fear\, judgement\, shame\, anger\, distractions and other hindrances can all show up in many ways. Often we try to find a way around them or ignore them altogether but the Buddha invites us to turn towards our difficulties and sit with them. Only through facing and naming our demons do we find freedom. Easier said than done. \nIn this daylong you will have the opportunity to identify what is most uncomfortable and turn towards the discomfort to develop a different relationship with the experience. Come spend a day facing your demons and yourself with kindness and compassion\, Maybe invite them in for tea. There will be dharma talks\, sitting and walking meditation and conversation. Suitable for everyone. \n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45. A portion of this fee is shared with the teacher\, however this does not mean the costs of the event or teachings are fully covered.  Dana (voluntary donations) may be offered on the day of the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. SUMMARY:A Day Dedicated to the Practice of Finding Love with Arinna Weisman
DESCRIPTION:It is said by the great Dzogchen teachers there is unconditional love that lives inside each of us. We don’t always experience this love all the time because of the obstructions or the hindrances that cover the heart. The love we may feel on different occasions is a thin sliver escaping from this great capacity and indicates its presence. On this day we will explore how to build access to this shining heart of love as well as explore the clouds that cover it. \nArinna Weisman has been studying meditation practice since 1979 and has been teaching since 1989. Her dharma practice and teaching have been infused with her political and environmental activism. She was the first out queer teacher with Eric Kolvig to lead insight meditation retreats for the Gay\, Lesbian\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Gender Queer community. She also leads ‘Uncovering the Heart Retreats’ integrating the practice of awareness of the social dynamics of inequity with the dharma practice of liberation. \nArinna is the Guiding Teacher at Dhamma Dena Meditation Center. SUMMARY:Pride Parade
DESCRIPTION:Yay! Our first time marching as a community\, supporting our LGBTQ+ community. Letting Palm Springs know that we are here as a refuge for all people\, especially those marginalized by dominant culture. And! We get to march with our friends from UUCOD and Desert Outreach Synagogue.  We will be walking behind our new banner (pictured above)\, wearing our new ICD t-shirts. \n\nIf you would like to march with us\, please attend our organizing meeting on Sunday\, October 27 @ 6 pm (just after the Dharma talk).  We’ll tell you when and where you need to meet on parade day\, share the safety details and distribute t-shirts. We have ordered shirts for those on our sign-up list\, but don’t worry if you are not on the list.  We ordered extra shirts.  Please be prepared to reimburse us $20 for each shirt. \nWe’re very excited to march as a community: LGBTQ+ and straight allies we can all celebrate together. \n

SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat: Refuge for the Resistance with Leslie Booker
DESCRIPTION:The writer Audre Lorde said\, “The Master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.”\nAnd at times it might seem that we live in a world that only values the three poisons of Greed\, Hatred and Delusion. \nAs activists\, agitators and change makers\, many of us were taught that if we scream louder\, sleep less and are more burnt out\, then we would be held as the most devoted to the cause. And in response\, we might incline our thoughts\, words\, actions\, our hearts\, towards these poisons. \nWhat if we chose other tools to respond with? \nIn this daylong retreat\, we will practice with how to direct our thoughts and actions towards Loving Kindness\, to create the kind of heart that can hold the humanity of All Beings. Working with the Brahmaviharas\, we’ll utilize these practices to liberate the heart and build resiliency\, in order to transform rage and anger into skillful action. \nRegister \n \nInstructor: \nBooker brings her heart\, wisdom and compassion to the intersection of Dharma\, embodied wisdom\, and social justice. Working for over a decade with the most vulnerable populations in NYC\, she shares her expertise nationally as a public speaker\, Dharma teacher\, and trainer\, in the efforts to support the sustainability of front line changemakers. She is a graduate of Spirit Rock’s Mindful Yoga and Meditation Training (2012)\, Community Dharma Leader’s Training (2016)\, and will graduate from their 4 year Residential Teacher Training in 2020. Booker is a co-author of Best Practices for Yoga in a Criminal Justice Setting and contributed to the paper on Gender and Trauma through Georgetown Law’s Center on Poverty and Inequality. She is a co-founder of the Yoga Service Council at Omega Institute\, and the Meditation Working Group of Occupy Wall Street.  www.lesliebooker.com \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $55.
