SUMMARY:On Race and Racism: Going to the Core
DESCRIPTION:On Race and Racism: Going to the Core continues the work begun by the Waking Up White course. It is conducted in 3 sessions:\nFriday\, October 18 at 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm\nSaturday\, October 19 at 8:30 am – 5 pm\nSaturday\, October 26 at 8:30 am – 5 pm\nLauren N. Nile\, the African-American facilitator\, has requested that the course be open only to people who identify as white. She believes that affinity groups provide the safe\, non-judgmental environment necessary to dialogue honestly about the issues of race and racism.  The goal of White affinity and People of Color affinity groups is to increase awareness of personal unconscious bias\, and thus build greater sensitivity to racial issues.\n\nLauren will offer and facilitate an affinity group for People of Color in the coming months.\n\nThe course addresses thirteen issues. Each issue is presented in the form of a question. Each question is examined through presentations\, deep dialogue\, journal writing\, personal sharing\, or meditation. Although the course focuses on racism experienced by Africans and African Americans\, other forms of oppression are respectfully acknowledged. Racism is not placed on a “hierarchy of oppression”.\nRegister Now \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $75-95. This fee does not fully cover the teachings. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. You may contact the event coordinator if you need a full scholarship.\n\n \n \nLauren N. Nile co-facilitated the final session of the Waking Up White course.  The focus of the session was on Non-Violent Communication with an emphasis on communication between people of different races. Lauren is an author\, trainer\, keynote speaker and retired attorney.  Since 1990\, she has conducted workshops for nonprofit organizations\, educational institutions\, governmental agencies and Fortune 500 corporations.   Her workshops focused on creating environments in which understanding and kindness are valued regardless of demographic differences.\n\nLauren focuses her community-based trainings on one topic – the oneness of humanity. The goal of her work is to help the human species mature beyond bigotry and violence through the understanding of our profound human oneness. She believes that wisdom and compassion result from that understanding.  Lauren is deeply committed to help all people see the Divine in themselves and themselves in each other.\n\n

SUMMARY:A Day Dedicated to the Practice of Finding Love with Arinna Weisman
DESCRIPTION:It is said by the great Dzogchen teachers there is unconditional love that lives inside each of us. We don’t always experience this love all the time because of the obstructions or the hindrances that cover the heart. The love we may feel on different occasions is a thin sliver escaping from this great capacity and indicates its presence. On this day we will explore how to build access to this shining heart of love as well as explore the clouds that cover it. \nArinna Weisman has been studying meditation practice since 1979 and has been teaching since 1989. Her dharma practice and teaching have been infused with her political and environmental activism. She was the first out queer teacher with Eric Kolvig to lead insight meditation retreats for the Gay\, Lesbian\, Bisexual\, Transgender\, Gender Queer community. She also leads ‘Uncovering the Heart Retreats’ integrating the practice of awareness of the social dynamics of inequity with the dharma practice of liberation. \nArinna is the Guiding Teacher at Dhamma Dena Meditation Center. Visit her website at https://www.dhammadena.org/ for more information. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat: Facing Your Demons with Mary Stancavage
DESCRIPTION:The Buddha had to face the armies of Mara on the night of his awakening. Milarepa\, the Tibetan wise man\, came home one day to find his cave filled with demons. Most of us deal with difficulties\, so-called demons\, regularly but often they’re hard to recognize or we choose not to look. Fear\, judgement\, shame\, anger\, distractions and other hindrances can all show up in many ways. Often we try to find a way around them or ignore them altogether but the Buddha invites us to turn towards our difficulties and sit with them. Only through facing and naming our demons do we find freedom. Easier said than done. \nIn this daylong you will have the opportunity to identify what is most uncomfortable and turn towards the discomfort to develop a different relationship with the experience. Come spend a day facing your demons and yourself with kindness and compassion\, Maybe invite them in for tea. There will be dharma talks\, sitting and walking meditation and conversation. Suitable for everyone. \n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45. A portion of this fee is shared with the teacher\, however this does not mean the costs of the event or teachings are fully covered.  Dana (voluntary donations) may be offered on the day of the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. When people are able to extend as much generosity as possible\, financial accessibility to our events comes with greater ease for the whole community. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n Teacher:  Mary Stancavage has practiced meditation\, yoga\, and cultivated a spiritual practice for over 30 years and in 2009 was empowered to teach Buddhadharma. Mary is based in the Los Angeles area and teaches classes\, retreats and does individual mentoring. She has taught at mindfulness at recovery centers\, has co-facilitated Year-to-Live groups since 2008\, and has had a weekly dharma class for over a decade. She also was a director at Against the Stream for ten years. Mary completed the Buddhist Chaplaincy Program at the Sati Center and served as volunteer chaplain at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. She also served as Executive Director of the Mind Body Awareness Project from 2016 to 2018. In taking the practice off the cushion\, Mary is honored to serve on the board of CLUE: Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice. Along with teaching she continues to investigate what it means to live with an undefended heart. Fun fact: Mary has a Masters Degree from UCLA and worked as an archaeologist in the Middle East. SUMMARY:Series Cancelled....On Race and Racism: Going to the Core
DESCRIPTION:A Workshop for People of Color \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHave you been frustrated by the current divisiveness and polarization around racial issues in the United States? Do you want to understand what is at the core of racist rhetoric and behavior? Are you interested in the issue of homophobia in communities of color? \n\n\n\nWe’d like to invite you to a three-part series in which those and other related issues will be discussed. The facilitator\, Lauren N. Nile\, who is African American\, has requested that the course be open to only those who identify as a person of color. She believes that affinity groups of those who identify as people of color provide the safe\, non-judgmental environment necessary to dialog about issues of race and racism in American society-at-large\, and homophobia in communities of color. \n\n\n\nThe goal of the series is twofold: \n\n\n\nTo offer information on the very core of race and racism; and\,To provide a safe environment in which people of color of all sexual orientations\, gender identities\, and gender expressions may dialogue in a safe\, non-judgmental environment about racism and homophobia in communities of color. It is hoped that in the process\, participants may increase awareness of whatever personal unconscious biases they may hold about both their own and other marginalized groups.\n\n\n\nThe race and racism issues presented in the session focus on the experience of several groups in the United States\, Native Americans\, Latinx Americans\, Asian Americans\, African Americans\, and Muslim Americans. They are examined through presentations\, group dialogue\, journal writing\, personal sharing\, and meditation. \n\n\n\nLauren facilitated an “On Race and Racism: Going to the Core” session in October\, 2019\, for European Americans. The hope is that the group of People of Color\, and the group of European Americans that have completed the session will come together sometime in the Spring of 2020 to dialogue about their respective experiences in the course and its impact on them. \n\n\n\nPlease click on the link below to find out more and to register for this important session. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCost: The registration fee for this event is $75. This fee does not fully cover the cost of the three sessions. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. You may contact the event coordinator if you need a full scholarship. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLauren N. Nile is an author\, trainer\, keynote speaker and retired attorney. She is the author of RACE: My Story & Humanity’s Bottom Line. Since 1990\, Lauren has conducted workshops for nonprofit organizations\, educational institutions\, governmental agencies and Fortune 500 corporations that focus on creating environments in which understanding and kindness are valued regardless of demographic differences. \n\n\n\nLauren focuses her community-based trainings on one topic – The oneness of humanity. SUMMARY:Karma Cafe
DESCRIPTION:6 sessions on Mondays\, June 29\, 2020 to September 28\, 2020 @ 6:30 – 8 pm.\n\n\n\nTopics\n\n\n\nJune 29: AgingJuly 13: AgingJuly 27: SicknessAugust 10: SicknessSeptember 7: DeathSeptember 28: Death\n\n\n\nYou are warmly invited to join Louise Lambert at the Karma Café. The program’s intention is to provide an opportunity for individuals to share experiences and views on the challenges of aging\, sickness\, and death. According to legend\, upon first having witnessed these inescapable human experiences\, the young Prince Siddhartha—the future Buddha—found an impetus to begin his search for awakening\, for a way out of suffering. \n\n\n\nToday\, those of us beyond our youth are also faced with these same challenges. And that is what led ICD to create Karma Café as a means of coming together in a supportive\, compassionate\, and caring environment to discuss these vital subjects. In a spirit of clarity\, please note that the program is not intended to be a grief support or counseling group. \n\n\n\nPlease register in advance for each session of the Karma Café: \n\n\n\n\nRegister \n\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Please save the email. The link you receive is unique to you. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCost: While this new program is free of charge\, dana is welcomed to support the Center.

SUMMARY:Deepen Your Practice: Group Interview Sessions with Cheryl Slean
DESCRIPTION:Take your meditation and dharma understanding to the next level with monthly online group interviews with Cheryl. The meetings will be similar to group interviews at a retreat\, where several people meet together with the teacher to get feedback on their practice questions and reports. This is an opportunity for serious meditators with a regular practice to receive individual guidance from an experienced meditation teacher\, as well as learning from others’ interactions with the teacher. \n\n\n\nAll experience levels are welcome\, as long as participants have a daily meditation practice and a commitment to attend silent retreats when conditions allow. \n\n\n\nCost: This program is being offered on a dana (generosity donation) basis. More than ever\, we see how deeply interrelated we are. Supporting our sangha and our teachers through the practice of dana is an act of wisdom\, compassion\, and love. Thank you. \n\n\n\nPre-registration is required for each class. A one hour class will allow Q&A with 6-8 people\, chosen first come\, first served from the registration list. To allow for no-shows\, we will slightly over-book the class. Any registrants who are not heard due to time will be offered the option to go to the top of the list for the next meeting. \n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. Please save the email. The link you receive is unique to you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Teacher\n\n\n\n Cheryl Slean has practiced Insight meditation intensively since 1995\, including hundreds of days of silent retreat. She was authorized to teach in 2007 and leads classes and residential retreats worldwide. In the secular mindfulness world\, Cheryl has a Certification in Mindfulness Facilitation from UCLA and has taught at many health & wellness\, addiction recovery and business settings as well as online with Mindful Schools. Cheryl is also a writer\, filmmaker and educator in the arts and sustainability\, and is currently working on social impact climate communication with the Natural Resources Defense Council.
