SUMMARY:Mindfulness in a CrAzy World with Beth Mulligan and Larry Yang
DESCRIPTION:How do we develop mindfulness and compassion in the midst of the world’s contradictory craziness?” Join us to explore mindfulness and loving-kindness practices in demanding and challenging times. \nThis First Noble Truth that there is suffering in our lives—seems to be even more apparent these days than not. We live in a world that encourages us to get away with as much as we can\, while giving as little as possible. Some leaders and messages in the larger culture encourage us to win at any cost\, to hoard as much material wealth as possible\, and to gain as much power as we can. One current advertising slogan paraphrases a cynical aphorism of doing things before asking any permission because it is easier to ask for forgiveness afterwards than to ask for permission. \nIs this how we wish to live our lives? We know if you are reading this you don’t\, however you may be asking\, “How do we develop mindfulness and compassion in the midst of this contradictory craziness?” Join us to explore mindfulness and lovingkindness practices in demanding and challenging times. Create the stillness and peacefulness internally\, that is so needed in the external world. We already have this peace within us\, sometimes\, like these times\, it just needs some extra space to emerge and become strong. The intention of this retreat is to provide this kind and open space for all of us. \nBeginning and experienced meditators are welcomed. Please bring a bag lunch. \nRegister\n  \n \nInstructors: \nBeth Mulligan\, PA-C is a certified Mindful Self Compassion Teacher and international teacher trainer. Larry has practiced meditation for almost 30 years\, with extensive time in Burma and Thailand\, and a six-month period of ordination as a Buddhist monk\, under the guidance of Ajahn Tong. SUMMARY:Waking Up in RelationshipA half-day retreat and workshop with Cheryl Slean
DESCRIPTION:Relationship can sometimes seem like the last frontier of spiritual practice. Because there’s so much that goes on inside when we’re interacting with others\, it’s easy to lose awareness and fall back into old\, unhelpful habits of relating. Bringing receptive mindfulness and wise reflection to our encounters is not only possible\, it’s a deeply educational process that paves the way for significant positive change. \nThis half-day mindfulness workshop will focus on improving our relationships by including them in our daily life practice. Through reflection\, group process and meditation we’ll explore topics like compassion with safe boundaries\, forgiveness\, releasing the need to change or judge others\, and relational mindfulness practices. You’ll come away with skills and understandings that will help you find your way toward more harmonious\, compassionate and fulfilling relationships. \nRegister\n  \n \nInstructor: \nCheryl Slean has been practicing insight meditation intensively since 1995\, including hundreds of days of silent retreat. She was authorized to teach in 2007\, and has a Certification in Mindfulness Facilitation from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center. She is currently serving on the Teachers’ Councils at Against the Stream and Insight Community of the Desert and regularly teaches classes and residential retreats at these centers and at other meditation\, health & wellness and business settings internationally. Cheryl is also a writer\, filmmaker and educator working in the arts and sustainability\, and is executive producer of VisionLA Climate Action Arts. For more information on Cheryl\, see www.aMindfulLife.org \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $25. This fee is shared with the teacher(s)\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. SUMMARY:Connecting to our Heart's Refuge with Ian Challis
DESCRIPTION:A sense of home or refuge — an internal base that offers shelter\, support and safety — is vital in an ever-changing\, unpredictable world. Buddhist teachings offer three universal refuges: Our own innate capacity for heart/mind awakening (Buddha)\, the refuge of practice and wisdom (Dharma)\, and the refuge of community (Sangha). \nJoin us for a day of practice and exploration of refuge as it relates to our lives and our world. Is it possible to bring a sense of home and refuge wherever we may find ourselves? \nWe will spend the day exploring mindfulness practices designed to strengthen and support this internal sense of refuge. We will also look at how this strong internal confidence and safety can be shared and supported with others through the practices of community: lovingkindness\, compassion and wise action. \nThe day will include periods of sitting meditation\, walking meditation\, short dharma talks and discussion. This event is suitable or new or experienced meditators. Please bring a lunch. \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nIan Challis practices and teaches in the Insight Tradition of Buddhism. He is a regular teacher and founding board member at Insight Community of the Desert in Palm Springs. He also teaches at Meditation as Refuge\, Michael’s House\, and the Desert Meditation Group in Rancho Mirage. Ian has studied and sat residential retreats with Rodney Smith\, Santikaro\, Narayan Liebenson\, Larry Yang\, Leigh Brasington\, Sylvia Boorstein\, Tara Brach and Joseph Goldstein\, among many others. Ian is currently pursuing certification as a teacher of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction. In April 2017 he graduated from the Community Dharma Leaders Program of Spirit Rock Meditation Center. \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45 with a sliding scale. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. SUMMARY:Awakening Together: Building Beautiful and Beloved Communities with Larry Yang
DESCRIPTION:Join ICD Founding Teacher\, Larry Yang for this daylong retreat. Building community can seem like a worthy purpose\, a high aspiration\, even a wholesome ideal. But the practices of Mindfulness and Lovingkindness invite us into experiencing more than that. The Compassion and Wisdom of Mindfulness invites us into the experience that Community is not just possible\, but that it is necessary for our spiritual growth and path…. and that it is\, sometimes\, a challenging thing to accomplish. \nBuilding community is not a luxury; it is not a hobby; it is a necessity in the intensities of this current world. Please come with the intention to really explore what Community feels like and to experience both how Community holds us together to grow and love\, and also how it can push us beyond who we think we are as individuals and as groups\, in the beauty of our human condition. \nBeginning and experienced meditators are welcomed. Please bring a bag lunch\, if you can. There will be a book signing and purchase opportunity for Larry’s new book Awakening Together at the end of the daylong. \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nLarry Yang teaches mindfulness and loving kindness retreats nationally and has a special interest in creating access to the Dharma for diverse\, multicultural communities. Larry has practiced meditation for almost 30 years\, with extensive time in southeast Asia\, and a 6 month period of ordination as a monastic under the guidance of Ajahn Tong. Larry is on the Teachers Council of Spirit Rock Meditation Center\, and is one of the core teachers of both East Bay Meditation Center (Oakland) and Insight Community of the Desert (Palm Springs). His current focus is training spiritual leadership within Communities of Color and LGBTQI communities. Larry was honored for his work in equity  and inclusion by being selected as the community’s choice for Grand Marshal in the 2016 San Francisco LGBTIQ Pride Parade\, whose theme was “For Racial and Economic Justice.” He has been developing community meditation teachers in Spirit Rock’s Community Dharma Leadership Program for 10 years\, and is one of the core trainers for the current Spirit Rock Dharma Teacher Training Program to develop fully empowered Dharma teachers in multicultural communities. \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45 with a sliding scale. SUMMARY:Personal and Boundless Loving Kindness with Amma Thanasanti
DESCRIPTION:Loving-kindness has personal and boundless facets. When we cultivate it personally\, we bring loving kindness directly to our body\, emotions\, mind states and relationships. Knowing unconditioned love is an access point to let go of a solid self-nature. When we do that we let go of boundaries that keep us feeling separate. Our fears that we will lose our personal love relationships release. We stop believing the stories we tell ourselves about who and w what we are. The myths that we are undeserving and essentially unlovable fall away. In this openness\, the heart natural response is to feel and let love in. \nThis retreat is suitable for new and experienced meditators. Bring a lunch for yourself. SUMMARY:A Day of Mindfulness: Ancient Teachings for Modern Times with Beth Mulligan
DESCRIPTION:Meditation and mindfulness are everywhere: in hospitals\, clinics\, and schools; in major medical\, psychological\, and scientific journals; on TV; and in popular publications—even on the cover of Time magazine. And thankfully so—since Jon Kabat-Zinn developed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)\, a treatment blending meditation and yoga\, it has been proven effective in treating conditions like chronic pain\, stress\, anxiety\, and depression for sufferers around the world. Lesser known\, however\, are the deep philosophical roots of MBSR known as the Buddhist dharma\, translated as “the teachings of the Buddha.” Although they form the very foundation underlying MBSR and other mindfulness-based interventions\, they often remain hidden within modern mindfulness practices. Why are these 2500 year old teachings still with us and so effective and relevant to this very day? \nThis Day of Mindfulness will allow participants to answer this question for themselves through the experience of the essential MBSR practices and teachings on the links to their ancient origins. The day will be informed by Beth Mulligan’s forthcoming book; \nThe Dharma of Modern Mindfulness\nNew Harbinger Publications\, January 2\, 2018 \nTHERE WILL BE A BOOK SIGNING AT THE END OF THE RETREAT \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nBeth Mulligan\, PA-C is a board certified Physician Assistant who has practiced medicine in the Coachella Valley for 28 years. She also has a long standing Buddhist meditation and yoga practice. Seeing the way Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn brought these two worlds together through MBSR and under his guidance\, she became a certified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction(MBSR) teacher and is an International Teacher Trainer and retreat leader. Over the last 12 years she brought MBSR to Eisenhower medical Center\, Desert Regional Medical Center\, the Lucy Curci Cancer Center\, Shelter from the Storm\, and school\, hospices and county agencies in the Desert. She offers these life changing teachings in ways that are secular and accessible to everyone. As a Core Teacher at Insight Community of the Desert\, and long time Zen Senior Student\, Beth Ann Mulligan\, is equally committed to to exploring the Buddha’s path. \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $45. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. SUMMARY:Mindful Self-Compassion: 8 week program with Beth Mulligan
DESCRIPTION:Insight Community of the Desert and Mindful Way are thrilled to be offering Mindful Self Compassion: an eight week program designed to bring greater ease and well being to your life; offering skills to help you make changes with kindness instead of self-criticism. \nWhat is Mindful Self Compassion (MSC)? \nMSC was developed by Christopher K. Germer\, PhD\, leader in the integration of mindfulness and psychotherapy (www.MindfulSelfCompassion.org) and Kristin Neff\, PhD\, pioneering researcher in the field of self-compassion (www.Self-Compassion.org). MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion\, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing—being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy\, sadness\, anger\, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness\, sympathy and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting. Research has shown that self-compassion greatly enhances emotional wellbeing. It boosts happiness\, reduces anxiety and depression\, and can even help maintain healthy lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise. Being both mindful and compassionate leads to greater ease and well-being in our daily lives. \nMindful Self Compassion (MSC) can be learned by anyone. It’s the practice of repeatedly evoking good will toward ourselves especially when we’re suffering—cultivating the same desire that all living beings have to live happily and free from suffering. \nMost of us feel compassion when a close friend is struggling. What would it be like to receive the same caring attention whenever you needed it most? All that’s required is a shift in the direction of our attention—recognizing that as a human being\, you\, too\, are a worthy recipient of compassion. \nIn MSC you’ll learn: \nhow to stop being so hard on yourself\nhow to handle difficult emotions with greater ease\nhow to motivate yourself with encouragement rather than criticism\nhow to transform difficult relationships\, both old and new\nmindfulness and self-compassion practices for home and everyday life\nthe theory and research behind mindful self-compassion\nhow to become your own best teacher \nMSC is a great follow up to any other Mindfulness program (MBSR\, Mindful Eating etc.) \nMSC is not a meditation class\, it is a compassion skills building class. \nA randomized\, controlled trial demonstrated that MSC significantly increased self-compassion\, compassion for others\, mindfulness\, and life satisfaction\, as well as decreased depression\, anxiety and stress. Improvements were linked to how much a person practiced mindfulness and self-compassion in their daily lives. \nFee includes eight 2.5 hr sessions\, one 4 hour retreat and all materials. There are a few limited scholarships availalbe. Contact Beth Mulligan at the address below for more information. \nContact Teacher Beth Mulligan for more details about the program: beth@mindful-way.com \nRegister\n  \nInstructor: \n \nBeth Mulligan\, PA-C is a certified MBSR teacher\, teacher trainer\, and adjunct faculty through the UMASS Center for Mindfulness. SUMMARY:Unplug and Tune In: A day of practice with Ian Challis

Please come early\, enjoy some tea\, and relax into the day. Please bring a packed lunch. Space is limited so please register soon! \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nIan Challis is the Guiding Teacher of Insight Community of the Desert\, Palm Springs. SUMMARY:Daylong Retreat: Refuge for the Resistance with Leslie Booker
DESCRIPTION:The writer Audre Lorde said\, “The Master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.”\nAnd at times it might seem that we live in a world that only values the three poisons of Greed\, Hatred and Delusion. \nAs activists\, agitators and change makers\, many of us were taught that if we scream louder\, sleep less and are more burnt out\, then we would be held as the most devoted to the cause. And in response\, we might incline our thoughts\, words\, actions\, our hearts\, towards these poisons. \nWhat if we chose other tools to respond with? \nIn this daylong retreat\, we will practice with how to direct our thoughts and actions towards Loving Kindness\, to create the kind of heart that can hold the humanity of All Beings. Working with the Brahmaviharas\, we’ll utilize these practices to liberate the heart and build resiliency\, in order to transform rage and anger into skillful action. \nRegister\n \nInstructor: \nBooker brings her heart\, wisdom and compassion to the intersection of Dharma\, embodied wisdom\, and social justice. Working for over a decade with the most vulnerable populations in NYC\, she shares her expertise nationally as a public speaker\, Dharma teacher\, and trainer\, in the efforts to support the sustainability of front line changemakers. She is a graduate of Spirit Rock’s Mindful Yoga and Meditation Training (2012)\, Community Dharma Leader’s Training (2016)\, and will graduate from their 4 year Residential Teacher Training in 2020. Booker is a co-author of Best Practices for Yoga in a Criminal Justice Setting and contributed to the paper on Gender and Trauma through Georgetown Law’s Center on Poverty and Inequality. She is a co-founder of the Yoga Service Council at Omega Institute\, and the Meditation Working Group of Occupy Wall Street.  www.lesliebooker.com \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $55. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. A dana (voluntary donations) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. There is a sliding scale and you may contact the event coordinator if you need a full scholarship.

SUMMARY:Unplug and Tune-In: A Day of Mindfulness with Ian Challis
DESCRIPTION:Need a break from the busy-ness of life? Some time to reconnect to what is truly important and nourishing? \nSometimes we may find ourselves squeezing in our practice after everything else. On Saturday\, June 15\, let’s prioritize our practice\, let’s offer ourselves the space\, time and support to truly enjoy and explore mindfulness practice in the company of like-minded friends. \nThe focus of the day will be practice: plain and simple. The day will be similar to what you might experience on an extended residential retreat: alternating periods of walking\, sitting and heart meditations. There will be brief practical instructions\, and support with opportunities for questions. \nAll that is required is a willingness to show up\, and to practice the Buddha’s way of peace that leads to wisdom and an open heart. \nDoors open at 9:00 and practice begins at 9:30am. Please come early\, enjoy some tea and relax into the day. Please bring a packed lunch. Space is limited so please register soon! \n \nTeacher: Ian Challis is the Guiding Teacher of Insight Community of the Desert. After decades of interest in the dharma and meditation\, he embraced a committed Insight practice in 2005. Since then\, he has sat residential retreats and studied with many senior teachers. He is a founding board member of Insight Community of the Desert and leads the Desert Meditation Group in Rancho Mirage. Ian is a 2017 graduate of the Community Dharma Leader (CDL) training program at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. \nRegister \nCost: The registration fee for this event is $40 with a sliding scale. This fee is shared with the teacher\, however does not mean the costs of the event or the teachings are fully covered. A dana offering (voluntary donation) may be made at the event\, and we encourage you to offer as much support of generosity as you are able. Please know that our policy is that no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. You may contact the event coordinator if you need a full scholarship.
